We want to address Meta’s recent policy changes affecting Threads, and how they impact our federation policy. Our goal is to balance our core values of openness and transparency with our commitment to user safety and privacy.
What’s Changing?
- After careful consideration, we have decided to limit our federation with Threads.net. This means that, while existing connections to Threads accounts will remain in place, most Threads content will no longer appear on SFBA.social.
- We reached this decision to minimize disruption of the 2,693 Threads accounts that are currently followed by someone on SFBA.social, while also taking a firm stance against Meta’s unacceptable policy shifts.
Why Not Full Defederation?
- A complete block would significantly impact a large portion of our users who currently engage with Threads users.
- We have not received any reports of problematic material since our initial federation, but we remain cautious given Meta’s poor policy choices.
What This Means for You
- We will continue to monitor the situation and adjust our approach if needed. This does not guarantee indefinite connection to Threads; we will re-evaluate if circumstances change.
- If you do encounter any content — whether from Threads or elsewhere — that violates our community standards, please report it immediately. Your reports help keep our community safe.
- If you have any friends on Threads, please encourage them to join us in the social web (here or elsewhere!)
- If you want to avoid all content from Threads, you have the option to block the entire instance from your account. Once blocked, you will not see or interact with any Threads accounts.
- Click on Explore.
- Enter “threads.net” in the search field.
- Choose the Profiles tab.
- Open one of the accounts by clicking on their name.
- Select the three dots to open a dropdown menu.
- Click on “Block domain threads.net”
If you’re using a third-party app, these settings may be different.
